Etymology
The term 'paternoster' comes from the Latin phrase 'pater noster,' which translates to 'Our Father' in English. This phrase is the incipience of the Lord's Prayer, which is traditionally recited in a repetitive manner much like how a paternoster lift operates. The resemblance lies in the cyclical nature of both the prayer and the elevator's function. The first known use of this term in reference to the elevator type dates back to the 19th century, with the invention credited to several English and European architects and engineers who sought efficient ways to move people between the floors of buildings, particularly in industrial settings. Despite their interesting design and historical significance, paternosters have become less common due to safety concerns and the evolution of more reliable vertical transport systems.
