Etymology
The word 'potato' comes from Spanish 'patata', which in turn comes from the Caribbean Taino word 'batata'. The potato is believed to have been domesticated in the Andes region of South America around 7,000โ10,000 years ago. It was brought to Europe by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Initially, it faced resistance as people were skeptical of its edibility, but eventually, it became a staple food in many countries.
