Etymology
The term 'Portuguese' derives from the Latin word 'Portucale,' which was the name of a settlement in the area that is now Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. The name of this settlement eventually evolved into the name of the country and its language. The Portuguese language itself evolved from Galician-Portuguese, a medieval Romance language that was spoken in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in what is now Galicia in Spain and northern Portugal. Following the establishment of the Kingdom of Portugal in the 12th century, the language gradually developed its unique characteristics, influenced by interactions with other languages and cultures, including Arabic during the Moorish occupation. The language spread across the globe during the Age of Discoveries in the 15th and 16th centuries as Portugal established colonies in Africa, Asia, and South America.
