Etymology

The word 'inkstand' originates from the combination of two Old English words: 'ink', which comes from the Latin 'encaustum', meaning 'colored or burnt', and 'stand', derived from Old English 'standan', which means 'to stand or remain'. The concept of an inkstand dates back to at least the 14th century when writing was predominantly done with quills dipped into inkwells. Inkstands were often made of glass, ceramic, or metal and were designed not just for practicality but also for aesthetics. They were popular among scholars and writers during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as ink was the primary medium for writing and record-keeping. With the invention of fountain pens and disposable ink cartridges in the 19th century, the use of traditional inkstands declined significantly.
