Etymology

The name Hollywood was coined by H. J. Whitley, the father of Hollywood. He and his wife Gigi were on their honeymoon in 1886 when they stood at the top of the hill looking out over the valley. They loved the view and decided to buy 500 acres on the hill. They built a house at the top of the hill and named it Hollywood. The name stuck and gradually the area became known as Hollywood. The first studio was established in Hollywood in 1911 by David Horsley. Since then, Hollywood has become synonymous with the American film industry.
