Etymology
The word 'gossypium' is derived from the Latin word 'gossypion', which in turn comes from the Arabic word 'qutun'. The cultivation of cotton dates back to ancient times, with evidence of cotton fabrics found in archaeological sites dating back to around 5000 BCE. Cotton played a significant role in the economy of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization and has since become one of the most important commercial crops worldwide.
