Etymology
The term 'Americas' originated from the name of the explorer Amerigo Vespucci. In 1507, a German cartographer named Martin Waldseemüller named the newly discovered continents after Vespucci, who had realized that the lands discovered by Christopher Columbus were part of a new continent, not Asia. The name 'Americas' has since been used to refer to the continents of North and South America collectively.
